– Abū Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet ﷺ said to me, “Recite the Qur’an for me.” I replied, “Messenger of Allah, shall I recite it to you when it was revealed to you?” He said, “I love to hear it from someone else.” So I recited Sūrat al-Nisāʾ to him until I came to this verse: “So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and We bring you as a witness over these?” (al-Nisāʾ 4:41). He said, “That is enough for now.”(1) I turned to him and saw that his eyes were streaming with tears.(2) Agreed upon.
– Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon the like of which I had never heard before. He said, “If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then covered their faces, and sobbing was heard from them. Agreed upon. (Its explanation has already appeared in the Chapter on Fear.)
– Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A man who weeps out of awe of Allah will not enter the Fire until milk returns to the udder,(3) and dust raised in the path of Allah will never be joined with the smoke of Hell.”(4) Reported by al-Tirmidhī, who said: a ḥasan-ṣaḥīḥ hadith.
– He also narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Seven types of people will be shaded by Allah in His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His: a just ruler; a youth who grows up worshipping Allah Most High; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love one another for Allah’s sake—meeting for that and parting upon that; a man invited by a woman of status and beauty but he says, ‘I fear Allah’; a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends; and a man who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes overflow with tears.” Agreed upon.
– ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Shikhkhīr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying, and from within him there was a rumbling sound like the boiling of a cauldron because of his weeping.(5) A sound hadith, reported by Abū Dāwūd.
