He also says: “As for the one whose scales are heavy, he will live a life of contentment.” (1) “But as for the one whose scales are light, his mother will be the abyss.” (2) (al-Qāriʿah 6–9)
The verses that convey this meaning are many: fear and hope are thus joined together in two consecutive verses, in several verses, or even within a single verse.
448 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “If the believer knew what punishment Allah holds, no one would hope for His Garden; and if the disbeliever knew what mercy Allah holds, no one would despair of His Garden.” Reported by Muslim (3).
449 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When the bier is set down and people—or, specifically, the men—carry it on their shoulders (4), if the deceased was righteous it says, ‘Advance me, advance me!’ but if he was not righteous it says, ‘Woe to it! Where are you taking it?’ Everything hears its voice except human beings; were a human to hear it, he would collapse.” (5) Reported by al-Bukhārī.
450 – Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “Paradise is nearer to any one of you than the strap of his sandal, and so is the Fire.” Reported by al-Bukhārī. (6)
54 – Chapter: The Virtue of Weeping out of Fear of Allah Most High and Out of Longing for Him
Allah the Exalted says: “And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it increases them in humility.” (al-Isrāʾ 109)
He also says: “Is it at this discourse that you marvel, and you laugh but do not weep?” (al-Najm 59)
