439 – Ibn Masʿūd, may Allah be pleased with him, related that a man had kissed a woman, then came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of it. Allah Most High thereupon revealed: {Establish the prayer at the two ends of the day (1) and during the early hours of the night; indeed, good deeds erase bad deeds} [Hūd 11:114]. The man asked, “Is this for me alone, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “It is for my entire community.” Agreed upon.
440 – Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have incurred a ḥadd; carry it out upon me.” The time for prayer arrived, so he prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the prayer was finished he said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have incurred a ḥadd; apply what is in the Book of Allah against me.” He asked, “Did you not pray with us?” He answered, “Yes.” He said, “Then you have already been forgiven.” Agreed upon.
His words “I have incurred a ḥadd” mean a sin that calls for discretionary chastisement (taʿzīr), not one of the fixed legal ḥudūd such as those for fornication, liquor, and the like, for those prescribed punishments are not nullified by prayer, nor may the ruler set them aside.
441 – He (Anas) also reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah is surely pleased with the servant who, when he eats a morsel of food, praises Him for it, or when he drinks a draught, praises Him for it.” Narrated by Muslim.
The word al-aklah—pronounced with an open hamzah—refers to a single act of eating, just as al-ghadwah denotes one morning meal and al-ʿashwah one evening meal. Allah knows best.
442 – Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah, Exalted is He, stretches out His hand by night so that the sinner of the day may repent, and stretches out His hand by day so that the sinner of the night may repent, until the sun rises from the west.” Narrated by Muslim (2).
443 – It is also narrated from Abu Najīḥ ʿAmr ibn ʿAbsah al-Sulamī—with the ʿayn and bāʾ both having fatḥah—may Allah be pleased with him
