Bakr and ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both, together with a small group (1). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose from our midst and was gone for some time, so we feared that he might have been cut off from us (2). Alarmed, we all stood up; I was the first to take fright, so I went out searching (3) for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until I reached an orchard belonging to the Ansar. — Abū Hurayrah recounted the episode at length until he came to the point where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Go; whoever you meet beyond this wall who bears witness that there is no god but Allah, his heart fully certain of it, give him the glad tidings of Paradise.” Narrated by Muslim.
430 – ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that the Prophet ﷺ recited Allah’s words about Abraham (upon him be peace): “My Lord, they have indeed led many of mankind astray; so whoever follows me is truly of me …” (Ibrāhīm 14:36), and the words of Jesus (upon him be peace): “If You punish them, they are Your servants; but if You forgive them, You are indeed the Almighty, the All-Wise” (al-Māʾidah 5:118). He then raised his hands and said, “O Allah, my community, my community,” and he wept. Allah—Mighty and Majestic—said, “Gabriel, go to Muhammad—and your Lord knows best—and ask him: What makes him weep?” Gabriel came to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him what he had said—while Allah already knew. Allah the Exalted then said, “Gabriel, go to Muhammad and say: ‘We shall please you concerning your community, and We shall never distress you.’” Narrated by Muslim.
431 – Muʿādh ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I was riding behind the Prophet ﷺ on a donkey when he said, “Muʿādh, do you know what Allah’s right is over His servants and what the servants’ right is over Allah?” I replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Allah’s right over the servants is that they worship Him and do not associate anything with Him; and the servants’ right over Allah is that He does not punish whoever does not associate anything with Him.” I said, “Messenger of Allah, shall I not give the people the glad tidings?” He said, “Do not tell them, lest they rely on it.” Agreed upon.
432 – al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “When a Muslim….”
