the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins (1); He alone is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful. [al-Zumar 53]
Allah the Exalted also says: “But do We recompense (in this way) anyone except the ungrateful?” [Sabaʾ 17]; and He says: “It has been revealed to us that punishment awaits whoever denies and turns away.” [Tā Hā 48]; and He says: “My mercy encompasses all things.” [al-Aʿrāf 156].
417 – ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner; that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger; that Jesus is the servant of Allah and His Messenger, His word which He cast to Mary, and a spirit from Him (2); and that Paradise is true and Hell is true—Allah will admit him to Paradise regardless of what deeds he has done.” Agreed upon.
In another narration recorded by Muslim: “Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Allah will forbid the Fire for him.”
418 – Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet ﷺ related that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says, “Whoever comes with a good deed shall have ten like it—or even more—and whoever comes with an evil deed, the recompense of an evil deed is one like it, or I may forgive. Whoever draws near to Me by a handspan, I draw near to him by an arm’s length; whoever draws near to Me by an arm’s length, I draw near to him by a fathom; whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him running. And whoever meets Me with sins that would fill the earth, yet does not associate anything with Me, I shall meet him with as much forgiveness.” Reported by Muslim.
The meaning of the ḥadīth is: “Whoever draws near to Me” through obedience, “I draw near to him” with My mercy; and if he increases (in obedience) I increase (in reward). “If he comes to Me walking”—that is, he hastens in obeying Me—“I come to him running,” meaning that I pour mercy upon him, hasten it to him, and spare him prolonged effort to attain the goal. “Qurāb al-arḍ,” with ḍamma on the qāf—some read it with a kasra, though the ḍamma is sounder and more widely accepted—means what is close to filling the earth. Allah knows best.
