are seized by the Fire up to his ankles; others are seized up to their knees; others up to the point where the waist-wrapper is fastened (1); and others up to their collarbones.” Narrated by Muslim.
“Al-ḥujzah” is the knot of the waist-wrapper just below the navel, while “tarquwah” (with an open tāʾ and a ḍammah on the qāf) is the bone at the hollow of the throat; every person has two, one on either side of the neck.
405 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “People will stand (1) before the Lord of all realms until one of them is submerged in his perspiration up to the middle of his ears.” Agreed upon.
“Al-rashḥ” means sweat.
406 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon the like of which I had never heard. He said, “If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then covered their faces, and sobs were heard from them. Agreed upon.
Another narration states: Something concerning his Companions reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he delivered a sermon and said, “Paradise and Hell were displayed before me, and never have I seen the like of today in good and in evil. If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” No day was harder on the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than that day; they covered their heads, and sobs were heard from them.
“Al-ḥanīn” — with a dot-below ḥāʾ — is weeping accompanied by a nasal humming sound.
407 – Al-Miqdād (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “On the Day of Resurrection the sun will be brought near to the creation until it is only a mile away.” Sulaym ibn ʿĀmir, the narrator from al-Miqdād, said, “By Allah, I do not know whether he meant the earthly measure of a mile or the kohl-stick.”
