and draw him close; as for his inner reality, that is not our concern—Allah will call him to account for what lies within. Whoever displays evil to us, we will neither feel safe with him nor believe him, even if he claims that his heart is sound.” Reported by al-Bukhārī.

50 – Chapter on Fear

Allah the Exalted says: “And fear Me alone.” (1) [al-Baqarah 2:40]

He also says: “Truly, the grip of your Lord is severe.” [al-Burūj 85:12]

And He says: “Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong; His Seizure is indeed painful and severe. In that is a sign (2) for whoever fears the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day on which all people will be gathered together, a Day that will be witnessed. We delay it only to a term already fixed. On the Day it comes, no soul will speak except by His permission; some of them will be wretched and others blessed. As for those who are wretched, they will be in the Fire, where they will sigh (3) and groan.” [Hūd 11:102-106]

He, Most High, also says: “Allah warns you about Himself.” (4) [Āl ‘Imrān 3:28]

And: “On the Day when a man will flee from his brother, his mother, his father, (5) his wife, and his children—every one of them, on that Day, will have a matter sufficient to occupy him.” (6) [‘Abasa 80:34-37]

And: “O mankind, fear your Lord! The quake of the Hour is a tremendous thing. On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling, every pregnant woman will miscarry, and you will see people appearing intoxicated though they are not intoxicated; rather, the punishment of Allah is severe.” [al-Ḥajj 22:1-2]

And: “For whoever fears standing before his Lord there will be two gardens.” [ar-Raḥmān 55:46]

And He says: “They will turn to one another, questioning. They will say, ‘Indeed, we were formerly among our families, ever anxious (7)…’” [aṭ-Ṭūr 52:25-26]

(1) That is: fearful in a way that makes one scrupulous about everything one does or leaves undone. (2) That is: as a lesson. (3) Zafir (exhalation) is the expulsion of breath, and shahiq (inhalation) is its return; mentioning both underscores the severity of their anguish and grief. (4) That is: His punishment. (5) That is: his wife. (6) That is: it so occupies him that he cannot attend to anyone else’s concerns. (7) That is: fearful of disobeying Allah and diligent in obeying Him. “Adhab al-samum” (the torment of the scorching fire) denotes a fire whose heat penetrates the pores like a deadly poison.

وَقَرَّبْنَاهُ ، وَلَيْسَ لَنَا مِنْ سَرِيرَتِهِ شَيْءٌ ، اللَّهُ يُحَاسِبُهُ فِي سَرِيرَتِهِ ، وَمَنْ أَظْهَرَ لَنَا سُوءًا لَمْ نَأْمَنْهُ وَلَمْ نُصَدِّقْهُ وَإِنْ قَالَ : إِنَّ سَرِيرَتَهُ حَسَنَةٌ . رواه البخاري . ٥٠ - باب الخوف قال اللَّه تعالى : ﴿ وَإِيَّايَ فَارْهَبُونِ (١) ﴾ [ البقرة : ٤٠ ] وقال تعالى : ﴿ إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ ﴾ [ البروج : ١٢ ] وقال تعالى : ﴿ وَكَذَلِكَ أَخْذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَا أَخَذَ الْقُرَى وَهِيَ ظَالِمَةٌ إِنَّ أَخْذَهُ أَلِيمٌ شَدِيدٌ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآيَةً (٢) لِمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ الْآخِرَةِ ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَجْمُوعٌ لَهُ النَّاسُ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَشْهُودٌ وَمَا نُؤَخِّرُهُ إِلَّا لِأَجَلٍ مَعْدُودٍ يَوْمَ يَأْتِ لَا تَكَلَّمُ نَفْسٌ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ فَمِنْهُمْ شَقِيٌّ وَسَعِيدٌ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ شَقُوا فَفِي النَّارِ لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٌ (٣) وَشَهِيقٌ ﴾ [ هود : ١٠٢-١٠٦ ] وقال تعالى : ﴿ وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ اللَّهُ نَفْسَهُ (٤) ﴾ [ آل عمران : ٢٨ ] وقال تعالى : ﴿ يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ وَصَاحِبَتِهِ (٥) وَبَنِيهِ لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ (٦) ﴾ [ عبس : ٣٤ - ٣٧ ] وقال تعالى : ﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّ زَلْزَلَةَ السَّاعَةِ شَيْءٌ عَظِيمٌ يَوْمَ تَرَوْنَهَا تَذْهَلُ كُلُّ مُرْضِعَةٍ عَمَّا أَرْضَعَتْ وَتَضَعُ كُلُّ ذَاتِ حَمْلٍ حَمْلَهَا وَتَرَى النَّاسَ سُكَارَى وَمَا هُمْ بِسُكَارَى وَلَكِنَّ عَذَابَ اللَّهِ شَدِيدٌ ﴾ [ الحج : ١ - ٢ ] وقال تعالى : ﴿ وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ جَنَّتَانِ ﴾ [ الرحمن : ٤٦ ] وقال تعالى : ﴿ وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِي أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ (٧) فَمَنْ ﴾

(١) أي : خافون خوفاً معه تحرز فيما تأتون وما تذرون . (٢) أي : لعبرة . (٣) الزفير : إخراج النفس و ( الشهيق ) : رده . والمراد بالزفير والشهيق : الدلالة على شدة كربهم وغمهم . (٤) أي : عقوبته . (٥) أي : زوجته . (٦) أي : يشغله عن شأن غيره . (٧) أي : خائفين من عصيان الله تعالى معتنين بطاعته . و ( عذاب السموم ) : عذاب النار التي تنفذ في المسام نفوذ السموم .
