nor neglects it,(1) and to honour a just ruler.(2) A fair (ḥasan) ḥadīth reported by Abū Dāwūd.
359 – ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with them all), related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He is not one of us who shows no mercy to our young and fails to recognise the honour of our elders.” A sound ḥadīth narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī; al-Tirmidhī said, “It is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīth.”
In Abū Dāwūd’s version the wording is: “…and fails to acknowledge the right of our elders.”
360 – Maymūn ibn Abī Shabīb (may Allah have mercy on him) reported that ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was once passed by a beggar, so she gave him a piece of bread,(3) and a well-dressed man of means passed by her, so she seated him and he ate. When she was asked about this, she replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Place people according to their ranks.’ ” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd, who added: “Maymūn did not meet ʿĀʾishah.”
Muslim cites it at the opening of his Ṣaḥīḥ in suspended form, saying: “It has been related from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to place people according to their ranks.” Al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh also recorded it in his book Maʿrifat ʿUlūm al-Ḥadīth and said, “It is an authentic ḥadīth.”(4)
361 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: ʿUyaynah ibn Ḥiṣn came to Madīnah and stayed with his nephew al-Ḥurr ibn Qays, who was among the group that ʿUmar (5) (may Allah be pleased with him) kept near. The Qurʾān-reciters—whether elderly or young—were the people of ʿUmar’s council and his advisers. ʿUyaynah said to his nephew, “Nephew, you have standing with this leader, so ask permission for me to see him.” He sought permission, and ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) admitted him. When he entered he said, “Hey (6) son of al-Khaṭṭāb! By Allah, you do not give us ample provision,(7)
