be those among you who are mature and possess understanding, then those who follow them—he repeated this three times—and beware of the commotion of the marketplaces.” (1) Reported by Muslim.

355 – Abū Yaḥyā—some say Abū Muḥammad—Sahl ibn Abī Ḥathmah al-Anṣārī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘Abd Allah ibn Sahl and Muḥaiṣa ibn Masʿūd went to Khaybar, which at that time was under a peace treaty. They separated, and Muḥaiṣa later came upon ‘Abd Allah ibn Sahl wallowing in his blood, slain. (2) He buried him and then returned to Medina. ‘Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Sahl together with Muḥaiṣa and Ḥuwayṣa, the sons of Masʿūd, went to the Prophet ﷺ. ‘Abd al-Raḥmān began to speak, but the Prophet ﷺ said, “Give precedence, give precedence,” for he was the youngest of the group, so he fell silent and the other two spoke. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Will you swear an oath and thereby secure the right against the murderer of your companion?” and he mentioned the remainder of the report. Agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.

The Prophet’s ﷺ words, “Kab-bir, kab-bir,” mean: let the elder speak first.

356 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ would place two of the martyrs of Uḥud together in one grave and then ask, “Which of them had learned more of the Qur’an?” (3) When one of them was pointed out, he would put him first in the burial niche. Reported by al-Bukhārī.

357 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) related that the Prophet ﷺ said: “I saw in a dream that I was using a siwāk. Two men came to me, one older than the other. I handed the siwāk to the younger, but I was told, ‘Give it to the elder,’ so I passed it to the older of the two.” Reported by Muslim with a continuous chain and by al-Bukhārī in suspended form.

358 – Abū Mūsā (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “Part of revering Allah, the Exalted, (4) is to honor the grey-haired Muslim, and the bearer of the Qur’an who does not go to excess concerning it,
