to Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with them both). When we had sat with him, Ḥuṣayn said, “O Zayd, you have indeed attained abundant good: you saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, you heard his words, you campaigned with him, and you prayed behind him. Truly, O Zayd, you have met with great good. Tell us, then, O Zayd, what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
He replied, “My nephew, by Allah, I have grown old, much time has passed, and I have forgotten some of what I once retained (1) from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Whatever I relate to you, accept it; and whatever I omit, do not burden me with it.”
He then said, “One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood to address us at a spring called Khumm (2), situated between Mecca and Madinah. He praised Allah, extolled Him, admonished and reminded us, and then declared:
‘To proceed: O people, I am but a human being. Soon (3) the messenger of my Lord will come to me and I shall answer his call. I am leaving among you two weighty trusts (4). The first of them is the Book of Allah; in it are guidance and light. So hold fast to the Book of Allah and cling to it.’
He urged adherence to the Book of Allah and encouraged devotion to it. Then he said:
‘And my Household—I remind you by Allah concerning my Household, I remind you by Allah concerning my Household, I remind you by Allah concerning my Household.’
Ḥuṣayn asked, “Who are his Household, O Zayd? Are not his wives part of his Household?” He replied, “His wives are indeed part of his Household, but those of his Household who are forbidden to receive charity after him are: the family of ʿAlī, the family of ʿAqīl, the family of Jaʿfar, and the family of ʿAbbās.” Ḥuṣayn said, “Are all of these forbidden to receive charity?” Zayd answered, “Yes.” Recorded by Muslim.
In another wording: “Behold, I am leaving among you two weighty trusts: one of them is the Book of Allah—it is the rope of Allah. Whoever follows it is upon guidance; whoever abandons it is upon misguidance.”
351 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates that Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may Allah be pleased with him) said—his statement being mawqūf upon him: “Look after Muḥammad ﷺ in regard to his Household.” Reported by al-Bukhārī.
The meaning of ‘arqibūhu’ is: watch over him, honor him, and treat him with reverence. And Allah knows best.
