In another version, narrated by Ibn Dīnār from Ibn ʿUmar, it is stated that whenever he set out for Mecca he kept a donkey on which he would take a break (1) when he became weary of riding his mount, and a turban with which he bound his head. One day, while he was on that donkey, a Bedouin passed by and said, “Are you not so-and-so, son of so-and-so ?” (2) He answered, “Indeed.” Ibn ʿUmar thereupon handed him the donkey, saying, “Ride this,” and gave him the turban, saying, “Tie your head with it.” One of his companions exclaimed, “May Allah forgive you! You have given this Bedouin a donkey you used to rest upon and a turban you used to bind your head with!” He replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Among the finest acts of filial piety is that a man maintain relations with his father’s friends after the father has passed away.’ (3) This man’s father was a close friend of ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him).” Muslim recorded all of these narrations.
347 – Abū Usayd—Mālik ibn Rabīʿah al-Sāʿidī (may Allah be pleased with him)—reported: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man from Banū Salamah came and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is there anything of dutifulness to my parents left for me to do after they have died?” He replied, “Yes: praying for them (4), asking forgiveness for them, carrying out their pledges after them, maintaining the kinship that exists only through them, and honoring their friends.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd.
348 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “I never felt jealous of any of the Prophet’s wives as I felt jealous of Khadījah (may Allah be pleased with her), even though I never saw her. But he used to mention her frequently, and sometimes he would slaughter a sheep, cut it into pieces, and then send it to Khadījah’s close friends. I would say to him, ‘It is as though there is no woman in the world but Khadījah!’ He would answer, ‘She was such-and-such, she was such-and-such (5), and I had children from her.’ ” Agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
