Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

His words manʿan (withholding) mean refusing to give what one is duty-bound to give, while hāt (hand it over) refers to asking for what is not one’s right. Waʾdu al-banāt (burying girls alive) means interring them while they are still living. The expression qīla wa qāla (he said, they said) refers to repeating everything one hears—saying, “It was said such-and-such,” or “So-and-so said such-and-such”—without knowing or even supposing it to be true; and it is enough falsehood for a person that he relate everything he hears. Iḍāʿatu al-māl (squandering wealth) is to dissipate it and spend it on purposes that are not lawfully sanctioned, whether having to do with the Hereafter or with worldly concerns, or to neglect safeguarding it when one is able to do so. Kathratu as-suʾāl (excessive questioning) means to persist in asking about matters for which there is no real need.

There are other hadiths on this subject that have already appeared in the preceding chapter, such as the report, “And I will sever from you whoever severs you” (1) and the report, “Whoever cuts Me off, Allah will cut him off” (2).

42 – Chapter: The virtue of honoring the friends of one’s father and mother, one’s relatives, one’s wife, and everyone whose respect is recommended

346 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The highest form of filial piety is for a man to preserve the ties cherished by his father.” (3)

ʿAbdullāh ibn Dīnār narrated that ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) once met a Bedouin on the road to Mecca. Ibn ʿUmar greeted him with salām, let him ride the donkey on which he himself was mounted, and gave him the turban that was on his head. Ibn Dīnār says, “We said to him, ‘May Allah set you right! They are Bedouins; they would be content with far less.’ Ibn ʿUmar replied, ‘The father of this man was a close friend of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “The finest act of filial piety is for a man to maintain relations with the friends of his father.”’”
