Heraclius then asked Abū Sufyān, “What does he—meaning the Prophet ﷺ—command you to do?” I replied, “He says: ‘Worship Allah alone and do not associate anything with Him. Abandon what your forefathers say, and he enjoins us to perform the prayer, to speak the truth, to remain chaste, and to maintain family ties.’” Agreed upon.

333 – Abū Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “You are about to conquer a land in which the qīrāṭ is mentioned.” In another wording: “You will conquer Egypt, a land where the qīrāṭ is used. Treat its people well, for they enjoy a covenant and kinship with you.” Yet another narration states, “When you conquer it, be good to its people, for they possess a covenant and kinship,” or he said, “a covenant and marital ties.” Narrated by Muslim.

The scholars said: the kinship (raḥim) refers to the fact that Hājar, the mother of Ishmael (peace be upon him), was from them, while the marital tie (ṣihr) refers to Maria, the mother of Ibrāhīm, the son of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was likewise from them.

334 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) related: When the verse “And warn your nearest kindred” (al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:214) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned Quraysh. They assembled, and he addressed them collectively and individually, saying,
“O sons of ʿAbd Shams, O sons of Kaʿb ibn Luʾay, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of Murrah ibn Kaʿb, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of ʿAbd Manāf, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of Hāshim, save yourselves from the Fire! O sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, save yourselves from the Fire! O Fāṭimah, save your own soul from the Fire! I possess no power to protect you against Allah whatsoever; all I have is a bond of kinship which I shall keep moist with its due.” Narrated by Muslim.

His phrase ﷺ “bi-bilālihā” may be read with the second bāʾ either opened or broken. Bilāl means “water.” The sense is: “I shall maintain that tie,” likening the severing of kinship to heat that is extinguished by water, while the heat here is cooled by keeping the bond of kinship.

335 – Abū ʿAbd Allāh ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declare openly, not secretly: “Indeed, the family of such-and-such are not my allies; rather, my ally is …"
