“Messenger of Allah, did you know that I have set my slave-girl free?”
He asked, “Have you really done so?”
She replied, “Yes.”
He said, “Had you given her to your maternal uncles, the reward for you would have been greater.” Agreed upon.
330 – Asmaʾ bint Abi Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:
“My mother, who was still a polytheist, came to me during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (1) I sought a ruling from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘My mother has come to me, and she is seeking something from me; should I maintain ties with my mother?’ He said, ‘Yes, maintain ties with your mother.’” Agreed upon.
Her phrase “rāghibah” means “hoping for something from me,” that is, she was asking me for help. It was said that the woman in question was her biological mother, and it was said she was her foster mother; the correct view is the first.
331 – Zaynab al-Thaqafiyyah, the wife of ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with them both), related:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Give in charity, women, even if it is from your jewellery.’ I went back to ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd and said, ‘You are a man of limited means,(2) and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has commanded us to give charity. Go to him and ask whether it will count for me if I give it to you; if it does, I will give it to you, otherwise I will give it elsewhere.’
ʿAbdullāh said, ‘Rather, you should go yourself.’
So I went, and at the door of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ I found a woman from the Anṣār whose need was the same as mine. A sense of awe surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Bilāl came out to us. We said to him, ‘Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and tell him that two women are at the door asking whether charity given to their husbands and to the orphans in their care(4) will be accepted from them, and do not tell him who we are.’
Bilāl went inside and asked him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Who are they?’ He replied, ‘A woman from the Anṣār and Zaynab.’
He said, ‘Which Zaynab?’
He replied, ‘The wife of ʿAbdullāh.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘For them there are two rewards: the reward of kinship and the reward of charity.’” Agreed upon.
332 – From Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb (may Allah be pleased with him), in his lengthy narration about the incident
