you support. The best charity is that which is given from surplus wealth (1). Whoever guards his dignity, Allah will safeguard it for him; and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will enrich him.” Reported by al-Bukhari.
37 – Chapter: Spending from What One Loves and from the Wholesome
Allah the Exalted says, “You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love.” ⦗Āl ʿImrān 3:92⦘
And He says, “O you who believe, give out of the good things you have earned and out of what We have produced for you from the earth; and do not aim at the inferior (2) thereof to give away.” ⦗al-Baqarah 2:267⦘
302 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Abū Talḥah (may Allah be pleased with him) owned more palm-groves in Madinah than any other member of the Anṣār, and the dearest of his properties to him was Bayraḥā’, a garden facing the mosque (3). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to enter it and drink of its pleasant water (4).
Anas continued: When the verse, “You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love,” was revealed, Abū Talḥah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Messenger of Allah, Allah the Exalted has revealed: ‘You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love.’ The property I love most is Bayraḥā’, and I hereby give it in charity for the sake of Allah, hoping for its blessing (5) and its treasure with Allah. So dispose of it, Messenger of Allah, wherever Allah shows you.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Bravo! (6) That is profitable wealth, that is profitable wealth. I have heard what you have said, and I think you should distribute it among your relatives.”
Abū Talḥah said, “I shall do so, Messenger of Allah.”
