Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

the she-camel and the man who hamstrung it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then recited, “When the most wretched of them rose up.” He added, “A man of standing—strong, violent, and well-protected among his clan—rose up against her.”

He next spoke about women and admonished the congregation, saying, “One of you goes and lashes his wife with the flogging of a slave (1), yet perhaps he will share her bed (2) before the day ends.” He then reproved them for laughing when someone breaks wind and said, “Why does one of you laugh at something he himself does?” Agreed upon.

The word al-ʿārim—with an un-dotted ʿayn and a rāʾ—means a wicked, corrupt person. His phrase inbaʿatha means “he sprang up quickly.”

280 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Let no believing man despise a believing woman. If he dislikes one trait in her, he will be pleased with another—or, he said: with something else.” Narrated by Muslim.

The verb yafruk is pronounced with a fatḥa on the yāʾ, sukun on the fāʾ, and fatḥa on the rāʾ; it means “to hate” or “to feel aversion.” Arabs say: farakat (with kasra on the rāʾ) al-marʾatu zawjahā and farakahā (with fatḥa on the rāʾ) zawjuhā—meaning, “she/he came to dislike the spouse.” Allah knows best.

281 – ʿAmr ibn al-Aḥwaṣ al-Jushamī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he heard the Prophet ﷺ, during the Farewell Pilgrimage, say—after praising and extolling Allah, reminding the people and exhorting them—

“Pay good heed to women, for they are captives in your hands; you possess nothing of theirs beyond that (3). If they commit a flagrant act of indecency, then forsake them in the beds and strike them with a blow that is not severe. If they obey you, do not seek any way against them. Know that you have rights over your wives and your wives have rights over you. Your right over them is that they must not allow anyone you dislike to sit upon your bedding, nor admit into your homes anyone you dislike. Their right over you is that you treat them well with regard to clothing and food.”

Related by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic) hadith.”

(1) That is, the same kind of blow, in that it is severe and injurious. (2) In al-Bukhari’s version the wording is “yujaamiʿu-ha” (he has intercourse with her). The hadith therefore allows disciplining a slave with a harsh beating and, by implication, permits striking wives with something less severe. (3) Meaning: apart from sexual access, safeguarding her husband’s person and property, and the household service that is obligatory for her.
