Riyad al-SalihinAl-Nawawi

231 – ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, related: Some Bedouins came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked, “Do you kiss your children?” He replied, “Yes.” They said, “But, by Allah, we never kiss them!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Can I help it if Allah has removed mercy from your hearts?” Agreed upon.

232 – Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever is not merciful to people, Allah will not show him mercy.” Agreed upon.

233 – Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When one of you leads the people in prayer, let him keep it brief, for among them are the weak, the sick, and the elderly. But when he prays alone, let him prolong it as he wishes.” Agreed upon. In another wording: “and those who have a need.”

234 – ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would abandon a practice that he loved to carry out, fearing that the people might imitate him and it become obligatory for them. Agreed upon.

235 – She, may Allah be pleased with her, also said: The Prophet ﷺ forbade them from wiṣāl (1) out of mercy for them. They said, “Yet you practice wiṣāl?” He replied, “I am not like you; my Lord feeds me and gives me drink during the night.” Agreed upon. Its meaning is: He endows me with strength as though I had eaten and drunk.

236 – Abu Qatādah al-Ḥārith ibn Ribʿīʿ, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I stand for prayer intending to prolong it, but when I hear a child crying I shorten it (2) because I dislike causing hardship to his mother.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.

(1) al-wisal (continuous fasting): to consume nothing that would break the fast between two consecutive fasts. (2) That is, “I shorten it.” Muslim, in another version narrated from Anas, clarifies what is shortened; his wording is: “he would recite a short surah.”
