206 – Hudhayfah and Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah—Blessed and Exalted—will gather all people (1). The believers will then stand until Paradise is brought near to them (2). They will come to Adam, upon whom be Allah’s blessings, and say, ‘O our father, ask that Paradise be opened for us.’ He will reply, ‘What expelled you from Paradise but your father’s sin? I am not the one for that task. Go to my son Abraham, the Close Friend of Allah.’
“They will go to Abraham, who will say, ‘I am not the one for that (3); I was only a close friend, waraʾ waraʾ—far beneath such a rank. Seek out Moses, the one to whom Allah spoke directly.’
“They will go to Moses, who will say, ‘I am not the one for that; go to Jesus, the Word of Allah and His Spirit (4).’
“Jesus will say, ‘I am not the one for that.’ They will then come to Muhammad ﷺ; he will rise, and permission will be granted to him. Trustworthiness and the ties of kinship (5) will be sent forth, and they will take their places on the two sides (6) of the bridge (sirat), to the right and to the left. The first of you will cross it like lightning.”
I said, “May my father and mother be ransomed for you! How is the crossing like lightning?” He replied, “Have you not seen how lightning flashes and returns in the blink of an eye? Then some will cross like the wind, then like birds in flight, and the strongest of men will be carried along by their deeds, while your Prophet stands upon the sirat saying, ‘My Lord, grant safety, grant safety,’ until the deeds of the servants fail, and a man comes who can move forward only by crawling. Along the edges of the sirat (7) are hooks suspended, commanded to seize whom they are ordered to seize: some will be scratched yet saved, and others will be hurled headlong into the Fire (8).
“By Him in whose hand is the soul of Abū Hurayrah, the depth of Hell is a descent of seventy autumns (9).”
