—meaning any change of colour whatsoever.
The expression “I saw two heaps” may be read with the kāf either open or closed; in both cases it simply denotes two piles.
The wording “as though it were overlaid with gold” is correctly written with a dotted dhāl, an open hāʾ and a single bāʾ, as affirmed by Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ and others. Some scribes corrupted it and wrote “mudhanah,” replacing the dotted dhāl with an undotted dāl, giving the hāʾ a ḍamma, and inserting a nūn; the same spelling is found in al-Ḥamīdī’s recension. The authentic, well-known form is the first, and on either reading the intended meaning is brightness and radiance.
