and kept away from His path” [Al-Anʿām 6:153].
He, the Exalted, also said: “Say, ‘If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins’” [Āl ʿImrān 3:31]. The verses on this subject are many and well known.
As for the hadiths, they are likewise extremely numerous and famous, so we shall cite only a few of them:
173 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever introduces into this matter of ours anything that is not part of it, it is rejected.” (1) Agreed upon.
In Muslim’s wording: “Whoever performs an act that is not in accordance with our command, it is rejected.”
174 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon, his eyes would redden, his voice would rise, and his anger would intensify, as though he were warning an army, saying, “The morning raid is upon you, the evening raid is upon you!” He would also say, “I and the Hour have been sent like these two,” and he would join his forefinger with his middle finger; then he would say, “To proceed: the best speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ; the worst of matters are those newly introduced, and every innovation is misguidance.” He would then add, “I have a greater claim over every believer than his own self. Whoever leaves wealth, it belongs to his heirs; but whoever leaves a debt or dependents, that responsibility is mine and upon me.” (2)(3) Narrated by Muslim.
175 – From al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriyah (may Allah be pleased with him): his previously-mentioned hadith (4) appears in the chapter on holding fast to the Sunnah.
19 – Chapter: Concerning Whoever Establishes a Good or an Evil Precedent
Allah, the Exalted, said: “And those who say, ‘Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and our offspring comfort to our eyes…’” [Al-Furqān 25:74].
