the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who reminds us of Paradise and Hellfire so vividly that it is as though we are looking at them with our very eyes. Yet when we leave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mix with our wives, children, and livelihoods, we forget much of what we heard.”
Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “By Allah, we experience the same thing.” So Abu Bakr and I set out until we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said, “Hanzala has become a hypocrite, O Messenger of Allah!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “And what is that?” I replied, “O Messenger of Allah, when we are with you, you remind us of Hellfire and Paradise until we see them before our own eyes; but once we leave your presence and busy ourselves with our wives, children, and worldly concerns, we forget a great deal.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, if you could remain in the state you are in when you are with me and in remembrance, the angels would greet you with handshakes on your beds and in your streets. But, O Hanzala, (it is) an hour like this and an hour like that.” (1) He repeated this three times. Reported by Muslim.
His statement “Ribʿī” is pronounced with a kasra under the rāʾ. “Al-Asidī” is read with a ḍamma on the hamza, a fatḥa on the sīn, followed by a doubled yāʾ with kasra. The verb “ʿāfasnā” contains ʿayn and sīn, both un-dotted, and means “we busied ourselves” or “were preoccupied.” “Al-ḍayʿāt” refers to one’s means of livelihood.

He asked about him, and they said, “That is Abū Isrāʾīl; he has vowed to stand in the sun and not sit, not seek shade, not speak, and to fast.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Command him to speak, seek shade, sit, and complete his fast.” Reported by al-Bukhārī.
