Likewise, al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Awsat (1/119/2 – its supplement)(1); it was then cited from him by al-Maqdisī in al-Mukhtārah (2/249), by al-Mukhliṣ in the Third of the Sixth of the Mukhliṣiyyāt (1/70), and by Abū Muḥammad ibn Shaybān al-ʿAdl in al-Fawāʾid (2/222/2). Al-Munadhirī (2/116) remarked, “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsat, and its chain is ḥasan.”
In my estimation there is no doubt as to the report’s soundness, for I have found yet another route from Ibn ʿAbbās. Al-Azraqī cited it in Akhbār Makkah (p. 35) as a companion-level narration, and its isnād is suitable for corroboration, as I have explained in my larger work Ḥujjat al-Wadāʿ (not yet completed). Al-Azraqī also transmitted it (p. 38) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said, “Someone I do not suspect related it to me from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās,” likewise stopping at the Companion. This, then, is the version commonly known regarding this ḥadith, and Allah knows best.
