Reply to the Third Objection
The third objection states that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—prayed in Masjid al-Khayf and that a hadith asserts, “In Masjid al-Khayf lies the grave of seventy prophets.”
Our reply is as follows:
We do not question that he ﷺ prayed in that mosque; however, the claim that seventy prophets are buried there carries no evidentiary weight, and that for two reasons:
- We do not concede the authenticity of the hadith in question. None of the scholars who specialized in compiling sound hadiths reported it, and none of the early authorities whose judgment is trusted declared it authentic. The principles of hadith criticism likewise do not support grading it sound, for its chain includes a narrator known for transmitting singular and unusual reports—something that keeps the heart from feeling at ease with a tradition he alone relates. Al-Tabarani said in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (3 / 204 / 2): “ʿAbdan ibn Ahmad narrated to us; ʿIsa ibn Shadhan narrated to us; Abu Hammam al-Dallal narrated to us …”
