the Noble Mosque, they still took certain precautions, seeking as far as possible to lessen their contravention. Al-Nawawī writes in his Commentary on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (5/14): “When the Companions(1) and the Successors needed to enlarge the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ because the number of Muslims had increased, the expansion eventually reached the dwellings of the Mothers of the Believers, including the apartment of ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—which contained the graves of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his two companions Abū Bakr and ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with them both. They therefore built around the grave high, rounded walls so that it would not be visible inside the mosque.(2)”

(1) The attribution of this report to the Companions is not sound, as already noted (p. 79); take heed. (2) This is a clear proof that the mere visibility of a grave from inside a mosque—even if only through windows, iron grilles, or doors—does not remove the prohibition. Such is the case with the grave of Yahya (peace be upon him) in the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and in Aleppo. Ahmad therefore ruled that prayer is invalid in any mosque whose qibla faces a grave unless another barrier separates the mosque wall from the cemetery, as will be explained. How much more serious, then, when the grave lies inside the mosque itself, in the direction of prayer, without any separating wall? From this you may judge the weakness of the opinion that “prayer in a mosque containing a grave, such as the Prophet’s Mosque or the Umayyad Mosque, is permissible …”
