able to extend it from the other directions without encroaching upon the Blessed Chamber. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb himself had hinted at this very error when—may Allah be pleased with him—he expanded the mosque from its other sides, leaving the Chamber untouched and saying, “There is no access to it.”⦗1⦘ By this statement he indicated the grave danger that would follow from demolishing the Chamber and incorporating it into the mosque.
Yet in open defiance of the foregoing hadiths and of the established practice of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, those who disagreed—once they had brought the Prophet’s grave into

باستطاعته أن يوسعه من الجهات الأخرى دون أن يتعرض
للحجرة الشريفة، وقد أشار عمر بن الخطاب إلى هذا النوع
من الخطأ حين قام هو رضي الله عنه بتوسيع المسجد من
الجهات الأخرى ولم يتعرض للحجرة، بل قال: «إنه لا سبيل
إليها»(١)، فأشار رضي الله عنه إلى المحذور الذي يترقب
من جراء هدمها وضمها إلى المسجد.
ومع هذه المخالفة الصريحة للأحاديث المتقدمة وسنة
الخلفاء الراشدين، فإن المخالفين لما أدخلوا القبر النبوي في
