Taḥdhīr al-SājidNasir al-Din al-Albani

al-Malik, after the great majority of the Companions who had been living in Madinah had passed away. The last of them to die was Jābir b. ʿAbd Allah, and he died during the caliphate of ʿAbd al-Malik—in the year 78 AH—whereas al-Walīd assumed power in 86 AH and died in 96 AH. Thus the rebuilding of the mosque and the incorporation of the chamber into it took place sometime between those two dates. (1)

(1) I observe that al-Hafiz Ibn Abd al-Hadi did not mention the exact year of this event because no reliably transmitted report meeting hadith standards records it. The account we quoted from Ibn Jarir comes through al-Waqidi, who is considered unreliable, and the narration of Ibn Shabba that Ibn Abd al-Hadi will cite rests on unknown transmitters—unknowns reporting from another unknown—so none of these chains can serve as evidence. The only solid basis is the agreement of the historians that the Prophet’s hujra (private chamber) was incorporated into the mosque during the reign of al-Walid, and that is sufficient to show, as the Hafiz explains, that the work took place after the death of the Companions who were still living in Madina. This conclusion is, however, challenged by what Abu Abd Allah al-Razi records in his Mashyakha (1/218) from Muhammad ibn al-Rabi al-Jizi: “Sahl ibn Saad died in Madina at the age of one hundred in the year 91, and he was the last Companion of the Prophet ﷺ to die there.” I do not know al-Jizi, and the chain is muʿdal (missing two consecutive narrators). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar reports a similar statement in al-Isaba (2/87) from al-Zuhri, and that chain is likewise muʿdal, or at best mursal. He then adds…
