Taḥdhīr al-SājidNasir al-Din al-Albani

…

Among the strangest trials Muslims face today—and one most remote from genuine, objective scholarship—is that the author claims to have abandoned taqlid (blind adherence) and to rely solely on the noble hadith. I met him a few months ago in the Zahiriya Library; our brief conversation showed me that he is familiar with the sciences of hadith and that he calls for ijtihad (independent reasoning) while waging an unrelenting war against taqlid. He told me he has written several works on the subject. Because the meeting was short, I could not determine his doctrinal orientation, though certain remarks suggested he is a khalafi Sufi. That impression was confirmed after I read this and other books of his: it became clear that he attacks the people of tawhid (pure monotheism), opposes their creed vehemently, defends bid‘a hasana (so-called “good innovation”), and sides with the innovators. His professed ijtihad serves only to champion whims and their followers, exactly as the self-styled mujtahids among the Shi‘a do. If you need proof, this very book, “… al-Maqbur,” is evidence enough: it buries every mutawatir hadith prohibiting the construction of mosques over graves—a prohibition unanimously affirmed by the leading imams. He is, it must be said, bold—but only in combating the truth. How else could he reject all the hadiths we have cited and the consensus of the imams without any proof, except by clinging to ambiguous texts such as the verse from Surat al-Kahf, just as innovators repel clear texts with the ambiguous? We seek refuge in Allah from such misguidance. You will soon see other examples from his own words confirming what we have said. Allah’s help is sought.
