or by altering its structure and diverting it from the purpose for which it was built. If such was the ruling concerning Masjid al-Dirār, then the idolatrous shrines whose custodians invite people to set up those buried there as rivals to Allah are even more deserving of demolition—and the obligation is all the greater. The same holds for venues of sin and debauchery, such as taverns, the houses of wine-vendors, and the dens of wickedness. ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab once burned an entire village where wine was sold; he also set fire to the shop of Ruwayshid al-Thaqafī (1), calling it “a little heap of corruption,” and he burned Saʿd’s palace (2) when Saʿd secluded himself inside it.
This view is the one demanded by sound reasoning, for were someone else to undertake the task, the ensuing harms and dissension among Muslims could well surpass the benefit sought.
(1) Al-Dulabi reports in Al-Kuna (1/189), through Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, that he said: “I saw Umar burn down the house of Ruwayshid al-Thaqafi until it looked like a live ember or a piece of charcoal; he was our neighbor and used to sell wine.” The chain is sound. The same incident is transmitted by Abd al-Razzaq from Safiyya bint Abi Ubayd, as cited in Al-Jami al-Kabir (3/204/1), and by Abu Ubayd in Al-Amwal (p. 103) from Ibn Umar; both chains are likewise sound.
(2) That is, the chapter on shortening the prayer. The story is narrated by Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak in Al-Zuhd (1/179) as referenced in Al-Kawakib al-Darari, tafsir no. 575 and nos. 513-518 (print), and by Ahmad (no. 390) with a chain whose transmitters are trustworthy.
