his grave, making it a mosque… those are the worst of creation….”
This is a clear and unequivocal text prohibiting the construction of mosques over the graves of prophets and the righteous, for the hadith explicitly names this practice as one of the reasons such people are counted among the worst of creatures in the sight of Allah Most High.
The same ruling is reinforced by the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade plastering the grave, sitting on it, or building over it.” ⦗1⦘
(1) Related by Muslim, 3/62 (whose wording is reproduced here); also by Ibn Abi Shaybah, 4/134; al-Tirmidhi, 2/155, who graded it sound; and Ahmad, 3/339 and 399.
Be aware that Jabir’s report forbidding the construction of edifices over graves is unquestionably authentic to anyone conversant with the canons of hadith evaluation. Do not be misled by al-Kawthari’s objection in his Maqalat, p. 159, where he claims that the isnad contains the *ʿanʿana* of Abu al-Zubayr (i.e., he narrates with the preposition “from” without explicitly saying “he told me”). In fact, Abu al-Zubayr explicitly states “he informed us” in the versions recorded by Muslim and Ahmad. I cannot believe this escaped al-Kawthari; rather, he does it deliberately—just as the partisans of caprice, past and present, weaken authentic hadiths that run against them and endorse weak ones that serve their purposes. Al-Kawthari is well known among the scholars for this practice. I have documented several instances in Al-Ahadith al-Daʿifah wa-l-Mawduʿah wa-Atharuha al-Sayyi fi-l-Ummah (reports 23–25); anyone who wishes may consult them, and an example will follow shortly.
