Taḥdhīr al-SājidNasir al-Din al-Albani

I say: This very matter has been expressly forbidden, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not sit upon graves, and do not pray facing them.”(1)

(1) Reported by Muslim (3/62); Abu Dawud (1/71); al-Nasai (1/124); al-Tirmidhi (2/154); al-Tahawi in Sharh al-Maani (1/296); al-Bayhaqi (3/435); Ahmad (4/135); and Ibn Asakir (2/151/2 and 152/2) on the authority of Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi. Ahmad judged its chain to be sound. Shaykh Sulayman, the grandson of Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab—may Allah have mercy on them—states in his marginal notes on al-Muqni (1/125) that the hadith is “agreed upon,” which is a mistake. Later (p. 281) he ascribes it to Muslim alone, and that is correct. Despite his learning and merit, he makes many similar errors in attributing hadith, so reliance on his documentation is unreliable. I shall cite a few further examples to alert students of knowledge and to offer sincere advice, for “religion is sincere counsel.” 1. He writes (p. 20): “Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: ‘Do not benefit from the carcass in any way.’ Reported by al-Darqutni with a good chain.” I say: This hadith is weak, and sound narrations contradict it. His attribution to al-Darqutni is also mistaken; I have found no earlier scholar who did so. 2. He writes (p. 28) about the Prophet’s saying: “Whoever performs istinja from wind is not one of us,” reported by —
