Second: He ﷺ said, “Do not pray facing a grave, and do not pray upon a grave.” (1)
Third: Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ forbade praying toward graves. (2)
Fourth: ʿAmr ibn Dīnār—when asked about performing the prayer amid graves—said, “I was told that the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘The Children of Israel…’”
= (3/61): “Its transmitters are trustworthy.”
(1) Related by al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-kabir (3/145/2); al-Diyaʾ al-Maqdisi also included it in al-Mukhtara, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Kaysan, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, as a marfuʿ report (attributed directly to the Prophet). Al-Maqdisi comments: “Regarding Abdullah ibn Kaysan, al-Bukhari said: ‘his hadith is munkar (unacceptable)’; Abu Hatim al-Razi judged him weak; al-Nasaʾi said: ‘he is not strong.’ Nevertheless, when I saw that Ibn Khuzayma and al-Busti had cited him, I decided to include the narration.”
I (the author) respond: The hadith is in fact sound, for al-Tabarani provides another chain (3/150/1) that is superior to this one, also from Ibn Abbas, and al-Bukhari cites it in al-Tarikh al-saghir (p. 163). In addition, the first half of the hadith is supported by the narration of Abu Marthad, which will be mentioned shortly.
(2) Recorded by Ibn Hibban (no. 343).
