= Ibn Abi Shayba, Musannaf, 4/141, on the authority of Zayd b. Aslam; its chain is strong. Another version is recorded by Malik in the Muwatta, 1/185, and from him by Ibn Saʿd, 2/240-241, on the authority of ʿAtaʾ b. Yasar as a marfuʿ report; its isnad is sound. Al-Bazzar supplied the missing link, narrating it from him through Abu Saʿid al-Khudri. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr judged it authentic both in the mursal and the connected form, saying: “This hadith is sound for those who accept the mursal narrations of reliable transmitters as well as for those who require a musnad chain, because of the isnad that includes ʿUmar b. Muhammad, whose additional material is accepted.” See al-Suyuti, Tanwir al-Hawalik. There is, however, a reservation concerning Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr’s remark about this ʿUmar. Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab writes in Fath: “Al-Bazzar transmitted it through his path, and this ʿUmar is Ibn Suhban; his lineage appears in some copies of al-Bazzar. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr assumed he was ʿUmar b. Muhammad al-ʿUmari, but this is apparently a mistake.
