and because the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, also said: “The space between my house (1) and my pulpit is a garden from the gardens of Paradise.” (2)

— Also in the Musnad of Ahmad, with the additional wording coming from the narration of Ibn Umar. Ahmad records it through numerous chains and with several corroborating reports from different Companions. I have listed these chains in Al-Thamar al-Mustatab fi Fiqh al-Sunnah wa-l-Kitab. (1) The authentic wording is “bayti” (my house). The widespread version “qabri” (my grave) is a mistake introduced by certain transmitters, as affirmed by al-Qurtubi, Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and others. For that reason it is absent from all the canonical collections. Its appearance in a few secondary reports does not make it sound, for it is merely a paraphrase. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya states in Al-Qaaida al-Jaliyya, p. 74, after citing the hadith: “This is the established authentic wording, but some people narrated it by meaning and said ‘my grave’. When the Prophet ﷺ uttered this statement he had not yet been buried. None of the Companions adduced it when they disputed over the place of his burial; had they possessed it, it would have resolved the argument. He was ultimately buried in the room of Aisha, exactly where he died. May my father and mother be his ransom; may Allah bestow blessings and peace upon him.” (Note) One scholarly lapse is that al-Nawawi, in Al-Majmuʿ, attributed the wording “my grave” to the Two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), although it is not found in either of their Sahihs; this needed clarification. (2) Related by Bukhari, Muslim, and others through the narration of Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Mazini.
