was revealed to keep people away from anything that mars tawḥīd. Yet his sorrow only deepens when he sees some—indeed, many—of the shaykhs endorsing them in that transgression under the pretext that “their intentions are good.” Allah Himself bears witness that many of them have had their intentions corrupted, and that shirk has cast its shadow upon their hearts because of the silence of such shaykhs—indeed, because they actually legitimize every manifestation of idolatry they encounter with that false plea. (1) A few years after writing this book I had a lengthy discussion in a Friday-khutbah preacher’s home about seeking aid from anyone other than Allah. The shaykh openly declared it permissible, arguing that the supplicant ‘knows the dead can neither harm nor benefit.’ I replied, ‘If that is truly the case, why does he call upon the dead at all?’ He answered, ‘They are merely intermediaries.’ I exclaimed, ‘Allahu akbar! You are saying exactly what others said before you: “We worship them only so that they may bring us nearer to Allah” (Quran, surah al-Zumar 39:3).’ I then added, ‘If you really believe that people do not attribute any power of harm or benefit to those deceased saints, would you accept that the supplicant openly state his creed by saying: “O Baz,* O you who can neither harm nor benefit, help me!”—is such an invocation permissible in your view?’ He said, ‘Yes, it is permissible.’ I concluded, ‘That is the clearest proof that you—let alone the ordinary folk—do think there is some benefit in calling upon them; otherwise you would equate calling on them with calling on inanimate objects, stones, or even idols, and I do not think you would allow that either on the pretext that those things cannot…
