“I see how deeply you mourn this man. Shall I fashion a likeness of him for you to place in your meeting-place so you can remember him by it?” They replied, “Yes.” So he sculpted a likeness, set it up in their assembly, and they began to commemorate him. When he noticed the extent of their attachment, he said, “Shall I make for each one of you, in his own house, a statue like it, so that he may remember him there as well?” They said, “Yes.” He therefore fashioned a statue for every household, and they would regularly recall him through it.
Their children then grew up watching what their elders did, generation after generation, until the original motive for remembering him was forgotten and they finally took him as a deity besides Allah. (1)
He added: “The very first thing ever worshipped on earth apart from Allah was Wadd—the idol they named Wadd.” (2)
