Chapter Five
The Wisdom Behind Prohibiting the Construction of Mosques over Graves
It is firmly established in the Sacred Law that, from the very first days of humankind, people were one community united upon pure monotheism; only later did polytheism arise among them. The foundation for this is the Almighty’s words: “Mankind was one community, then Allah sent the prophets as bearers of glad tidings and as warners.” (1)
Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
“Between Noah and Adam there were ten generations; all of them lived according to one true dispensation. Then they differed, so Allah sent the prophets as bearers of glad tidings and as warners.” (2)
(1) Surah al-Baqarah, verse 213.
(2) Reported by Ibn Jarir in his Tafsir, 4:275 (ed. Ahmad Shakir), and by al-Hakim, 2:546, who graded it “authentic according to al-Bukhari’s criteria,” a judgment confirmed by al-Dhahabi. I note that Ibn Urwah al-Hanbali erroneously attributed it to Sahih al-Bukhari. As for the report transmitted by al-Awfi from Ibn Abbas—“The people were a single community,” i.e., they were disbelievers, “so Allah sent the prophets as bearers of good news and as warners”—it is not soundly linked to Ibn Abbas, for al-Awfi is unreliable.
