“for the security of Quraysh” (1). When he had completed his pilgrimage and was on the return journey, the people began rushing toward something. He asked, “What is this?” They replied, “A mosque in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once prayed.” He said, “This is exactly how the People of the Scripture were ruined: they turned the traces of their prophets into churches! If any one of you happens to reach such a spot and the time for prayer overtakes him, let him pray there; but if he is not overtaken by the time of prayer, then he must not deliberately pray there.” (2)
- Nāfiʿ reported: “News reached ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb that some people were going to the tree beneath which the pledge had been taken, so he ordered that it be cut down.” (3)

(3) I note: Ibn Abi Shaybah also transmits it (2/73/2); all the narrators are reliable, yet the chain is broken between Nafi and Umar, so the missing link is probably Abd Allah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both. I then reconsidered and added: this conclusion is weakened by what al-Bukhari records in his Sahih, “Book of Jihad,” through another isnad from Nafi, who said that Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, declared: “We returned the following year, and not even two people gathered at the tree under which we had pledged allegiance.”
قريش (١) ، فلما قضى حجـه ورجع والناس ، يبتدرون ، فقال : ما هذا ؟ فقال : مسجد صلى فيه رسول الله ﷺ ، فقال : هكذا هلك أهل الكتاب ، اتخذوا آثار أنبيائهم بيعًا ! من عرضت له منكم فيها الصلاة ، فليصل ، ومن لم يعرض له منكم فيه الصلاة فلا يصل (٢) .
٧ - عن نافع قال :
«بلغ عمر بن الخطاب أن ناسا يأتون الشجرة التي بويع تحتها ، فأمر بها فقطعت» (٣) .
