Anas reported that he disliked a mosque being built among the graves. (1)
-
Ibrāhīm likewise disliked turning a grave into a mosque. (2)
This Ibrāhīm is Ibn Yazīd al-Nakhaʿī, the reliable Imām, a young Successor who died in 96 AH. He unquestionably received this ruling from some of the senior Successors or from the Companions he met. Hence it is conclusive evidence that they held this ruling to remain valid after the Prophet ﷺ—so when, exactly, was it abrogated?
- Al-Maʿrūr ibn Suwayd said: “We travelled with ʿUmar on a pilgrimage he performed, and at the dawn prayer he recited for us, ‘Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the People of the Elephant’ (3) and: ‘Li-īlāfi…’”
(1) Reported by Ibn Abi Shayba, al-Musannaf, 2/185; its narrators are reliable and belong to those accepted by the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Abu Bakr Ibn al-Athram also transmitted it, as quoted in Ibn Rajab, Fath al-Bari, 1/81/65 (al-Kawakib edition).
(2) Reported by Ibn Abi Shayba, al-Musannaf, 4/134, with an authentic chain from him.
(3) Surah al-Fil, verse 1.
