Now, because this ḥadīth is a clear proof that refutes what Shaykh al-Ghumārī advanced in the previously cited book, he tried to escape its force by two methods:
- By interpreting it in a way that suits his doctrine;
- By casting doubt on its authenticity.
He therefore said (p. 57):
"One of two conclusions is inevitable: either the report itself is not authentic, or it must necessarily be taken in a sense other than its apparent meaning."
I reply: As to its authenticity, there is no doubt whatsoever, for it is transmitted through numerous chains, some of which are found in the Ṣaḥīḥ collections, as has already been shown. But people of caprice do not adhere to the scholarly rules of authenticating and weakening ḥadīths; whatever goes against them they deem weak—even when it is in fact sound—such as this ḥadīth (1), and
…to the ground in a firmer manner; this explanation is closer to the actual wording of the hadith than the view that it merely means “levelling.” The same remark is found in Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, 2/154, quoting al-Mirqat.

ولما كان هذا الحديث حجة واضحة على إبطال ما ذهب
إليه الشيخ الغماري في كتابه المشار إليه سابقاً حاول التفصي
منه من طريقين:
الأول: تأويله، حتى يتفق مع مذهبه!
والآخر: التشكيك في ثبوته! فقال (ص ٥٧):
«فلا بد من أحد أمرين: إما أن يكون غير ثابت في نفسه،
أو هو محمول على غير ظاهره ولا بد».
قلت: أما ثبوته فلا شك فيه، لأن له طرقاً كثيرة بعضها في
«الصحيح» كما سبق، ولكن أصحاب الأهواء لا يلتزمون
القواعد العلمية في التصحيح والتضعيف، بل ما كان عليهم
ضعفوه، ولو كان في نفسه صحيحاً، كهذا الحديث(١)، وما
= الأرض تغليظاً، وهذا أقرب إلى اللفظ أي لفظ الحديث من التسوية».
وكذا في «تحفة الأحوذي» (٢ / ١٥٤) نقلاً عن «المرقاة».
