First: No authentic hadith traced back to the Prophet affirms that Ishmael—peace be upon him—or any other noble prophet was buried inside the Sacred Mosque. Nothing of the sort is found in any of the reliable hadith collections: the Six Canonical Books, the Musnad of Ahmad, the three Muʿjams of al-Ṭabarāni, or any of the other well-known compendia. This very absence is, for a number of critical scholars, one of the strongest indications that the report is weak, indeed fabricated (1).
At best, what has been narrated on this point amounts to a handful of problematic historical reports with feeble chains of transmission, all of them mawqūf, cited by al-Azraqī in Akhbār Makkah (pp. 39, 219, 220). They warrant no consideration, even though some innovators parade them as if they were uncontested facts (2).
