And He, exalted is He, also says: “So know, [O] Muhammad, that there is no deity but Allah, and seek forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women.”

Because of this it is related in the hadith that Satan says, “I ruined people through sins, but they ruined me with lā ilāha illā Allah (there is no god but Allah) and with seeking forgiveness.”

Jonah, the prophet of Allah, declared: “Lā ilāha illā anta, subḥānaka innī kuntu mina–ẓ–ẓālimīn (There is no deity but You; glory be to You; I was indeed among the wrongdoers).”

Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his riding-animal, he would praise Allah, pronounce the takbīr three times, and then say: “Lā ilāha illā anta; I have wronged myself, so forgive me.”

The expiation for a gathering with which he would conclude his sessions—as well as after ablution—is: “Subḥānaka-llāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk (Glory and praise be to You, O Allah; I bear witness that there is no deity but You; I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You).”
