Mighty and Majestic is He: ﴾When the girl buried alive is asked﴿—she will be asked on the Day of Resurrection—﴾for what sin she was killed﴿. Did she commit any sin? If someone asks, “How can she be questioned when she is the one who was wronged ... the one buried alive? Moreover, she may have been buried while too young to understand and before she was subject to religious accountability. How, then, can she be questioned?” The answer is that she is questioned as a rebuke to the one who buried her alive. She will be questioned in his presence and asked, “For what sin were you killed?” or, “For what sin was she killed?” This is like someone assaulting another person in this world and their being brought before the sovereign or governor, who asks the victim, “For what sin did this man strike you?” even though he knows that the victim was attacked and had done nothing wrong. The question is merely intended to rebuke the wrongdoer. Thus, the girl buried alive is asked for what sin she was killed as a rebuke to the one who wronged, killed, and buried her. We ask Allah to keep us safe.
﴾When the records are laid open﴿: “Records” is the plural of “record,” and these are what deeds are written in. Know, O human being, that everything you do, whether word or deed, is written down and entered into records by trustworthy, noble scribes who know whatever you do. Every single thing you do is recorded until you reach the Day of Resurrection. Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says in His Book: ﴾We have bound every person’s deeds to his neck﴿—meaning that his deeds are bound to his neck—﴾and on the Day of Resurrection We shall bring forth for him a record which he will find spread open﴿—open—﴾Read your record! Today you alone are sufficient to take account of yourself.﴿ [Al-Isrā’: 13–14]
What we are saying now, as we speak, is being recorded. What you say to one another is being recorded. Every word is recorded: ﴾Not a word does one utter without a vigilant observer standing ready﴿ [Qāf: 18]. For this reason, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Part of the excellence of a person’s Islam is leaving what does not concern him” (1), and he said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak what is good or remain silent” (2), because everything will be recorded against him. The more a person speaks, the more—
