Commentary on Surah al-Takwīr
﴾In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.﴿
﴾When the sun is folded up * when the stars lose their light * when the mountains are set in motion * when pregnant she-camels are left untended * when the wild beasts are gathered * when the seas are set ablaze * when souls are paired * when the infant girl buried alive is asked * for what sin she was killed * when the records are laid open * when the sky is stripped away * when Hellfire is fiercely kindled * when Paradise is brought near * then each soul will know what it has brought forth.﴿
The basmala has already been discussed.
﴾When the sun is folded up﴿: This will occur on the Day of Resurrection. Folding means gathering one part of something onto another and wrapping it, just as a turban is wound around the head. The sun is an immense, vast body. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah—Mighty and Majestic—will fold it up completely, wrapping one part over another until its light disappears (1). He—Mighty and Majestic—will cast it into the Fire; Mighty and Majestic is He. This will enrage those who worship it besides Allah. Allah—Exalted is He—says:
﴾Indeed, you and whatever you worship besides Allah are the fuel of Hell﴿—meaning that you will be hurled into Hell—﴾You will certainly enter it.﴿ [Al-Anbiyā: 98]
An exception is made, however, for any of Allah’s righteous servants who was worshipped besides Him, for such a person will not be cast into the Fire. As Allah Most High says after this verse:
﴾As for those for whom We have already decreed the finest reward, they will be kept far from it. They will not even hear its faintest sound, and they will abide forever amid whatever their souls desire.﴿ [Al-Anbiyā: 101, 102]
