knowledge said: He will flee from them lest they demand that he answer for neglecting their rights, whether in proper conduct or other matters. No one on that Day would ever want anyone to have a claim against him. ﴾Each of them will have enough concern of his own that Day.﴿ Every person will be preoccupied with himself and will pay no attention to anyone else. Thus, when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “You will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised,” Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—asked, “Will the men and women be looking at one another?” The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—replied, “The matter will be too grave for them to look at one another.” (1)
Allah then divided people on that Day into two groups, saying: ﴾Some faces that Day﴿—meaning the Day of Resurrection—(will be radiant). The word denotes brightness and clarity, for these are the believers’ faces, revealing the joy and delight within their hearts. ﴾Laughing﴿ means smiling, which reflects their perfect joy; and ﴾rejoicing﴿ means that they will have received glad tidings of good, for the angels will welcome them with good news, saying, ﴾Peace be upon you.﴿
﴾While other faces that Day﴿—meaning the Day of Resurrection—﴾will be covered with dust,﴿ that is, with something resembling dust, for they will be hideous and ugly. ﴾Overcast with gloom,﴿ meaning darkness. ﴾Those are the disbelievers, the wicked﴿ who combined disbelief with wickedness. We ask Allah for well-being, and we ask Allah Most High to make us among those whose faces will be radiant, laughing, and rejoicing. Indeed, He is Most Generous and Munificent.
