it is hidden from you, then it is hidden from me. If the most knowledgeable of the angels and the most knowledgeable of humankind do not know when the Hour will come, what then of those beneath them? From this, we know that everything some people circulate—claiming that the Hour will occur on such-and-such a date or during a particular period—is false. We know it is false because no one knows when the Hour will come except Allah, Glorious and Exalted.
“You are only a warner to those who fear it.” This means that you have no knowledge of it; you are only a warner to those who fear it—that is, the believers. As for those who deny it, deem it far-fetched, and reject it as false, the warning will not benefit them: “Signs and warnings are of no avail to people who do not believe” [Yūnus: 101].
Therefore, we say: Do not ask when or where you will die, for this requires no question. It is a settled matter and must inevitably occur. No matter how long you remain in this world, it will seem as though you stayed for only one day—or, as Allah Most High says here: “On the Day they see it, it will be as though they had remained only for a single evening or its morning.”
Rather, the question you must put to yourself—and for which you must have an answer—is: In what state will you die?! I do not mean whether you will die rich or poor, strong or weak, with children or without. Rather: in what state of deeds will you die? If you ask yourself this question, you must prepare, for you do not know when death will take you by surprise. How many people have left home driving their cars, only to be brought back carried upon shoulders? How many have left their families saying, “Prepare lunch or dinner for me,” yet never ate it? How many have put on their shirts and fastened their buttons, only for the one washing their bodies to unfasten them? Everyone has witnessed such things in sudden incidents.
So consider now and reflect upon the state in which you will die. You should therefore seek forgiveness as much as you can, for seeking forgiveness brings relief from every anxiety and a way out of every hardship. Some scholars even say that if someone asks you for a legal ruling, you should seek forgiveness—
