Tafsir al-Uthaymin Juz AmmaIbn al-'Uthaymin

Having reminded His servants of these blessings, which demonstrate the perfection of His power and mercy, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, then reminded them of their inevitable fate, from which there is no escape. He, Mighty and Majestic, said:

“When the Overwhelming Catastrophe comes,
on the Day when man will remember all that he strove for,
and Hellfire is brought plainly into view for all who see;
then as for the one who transgressed
and preferred the life of this world,
Hellfire will indeed be the abode.
But as for the one who feared standing before his Lord and restrained the soul from its desires,
Paradise will indeed be the abode.”

“When the Overwhelming Catastrophe comes”—this is the advent of the Hour. It is called the Overwhelming Catastrophe because it is a tremendous disaster that overwhelms everything preceding it. “The Overwhelming”—meaning that it is greater than every other catastrophe.

“On the Day when man will remember all that he strove for.” This is the day on which the Overwhelming Catastrophe will occur, and on which man will remember all that he strove for. That is, he will remember everything he did in this world, recorded in a book before him which he will read himself. Allah Most High says, “We will bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will find spread open. ‘Read your record! Today you are sufficient to take account of yourself’” [al-Isrā: 13–14].

When he reads it, he will remember all that he strove for—that is, all that he did. Today, however, we have forgotten what we have done. We have done many deeds: some righteous, some frivolous, and some evil, yet we forget all of them. On the Day of Resurrection, all of this will be presented to us in a record, and each person will be told, “Read your record yourself. Today you are sufficient to take account of yourself” [al-Isrā: 14]. He will then remember all that he strove for, “and the disbeliever will say, ‘If only I were dust!’” [al-Naba: 40].

“And Hellfire is brought plainly into view for all who see.” “Brought plainly into view” means made manifest. It will come, led by seventy thousand reins, each rein pulled by seventy thousand angels (1). When the wrongdoers are cast into a confined place within it, shackled together, they will cry out there for destruction,
