“Remember such-and-such”—things he had not previously remembered—until the man no longer knows how many units of prayer he has performed.(1) For this reason, it is related in a report: “When ghouls appear in different guises, hasten to make the call to prayer.”(2) Ghouls are devils that make themselves appear to travelers on their journeys as terrifying creatures, an enemy, or the like. When a person says, “Allah is the Greatest,” they depart.
His words, “from among jinn and mankind,” mean that whisperings may come from the jinn or from human beings. Whispering by the jinn is readily understood, for Satan courses through a human being as blood does. As for whispering by human beings, how many people approach someone, urging him toward evil and making it attractive within his heart, until their words captivate his mind and he turns toward them!
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) retired to bed, he would blow lightly into his palm after reciting these three surahs—al-Ikhlās, al-Falaq, and al-Nās—and then wipe his face and as much of his body as he could.(3) At times, he would also recite them after the five daily prayers.(4) A person should therefore take care to follow the Sunnah by reciting them at their prescribed times, as reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
With this, we conclude the final section of the Quran, Juz al-Naba. Allah knows best. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his family and Companions.
