The third category is the person who wavers. Of these three, the one who is saved belongs to the first category: one whose faith contains no hesitation. He believes in Allah’s existence, His Lordship, His exclusive right to worship, and His names and attributes—Glorious and Exalted is He. He believes in the angels, who are an unseen order of creation whom Allah Most High created from light and charged with various duties, some of which are known to us and others unknown. Gabriel—peace be upon him—is charged with revelation, bringing it down from Allah to the prophets and messengers. Michael is charged with rainfall and vegetation; that is, Allah has placed him in charge of the rain, everything connected with it, and vegetation. Isrāfīl is entrusted with blowing the Trumpet, Mālik is entrusted with the Fire, and Ridwān is entrusted with Paradise.
There are also angels whose names and duties we do not know. It is reported, however, in a hadith from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—that “there is no space of four fingers in heaven without an angel standing before Allah, bowing, or prostrating.” (1)
Likewise, we believe in the Books that Allah revealed to the messengers—may blessings and peace be upon them—and we believe individually in those messengers whose accounts Allah has related to us. As for those whose accounts He has not related to us, we believe in them collectively, for Allah has not related to us the accounts of every messenger. Allah Most High says:
“Among them are those whose stories We have related to you, and among them are those whose stories We have not related to you.” [Ghāfir: 78]
The Last Day is the Day of Resurrection, when people will emerge from their graves for recompense barefoot, naked, uncircumcised, and possessing nothing. “Barefoot” means that they will be wearing neither sandals nor leather socks; in other words, their feet will be bare. “Naked” means that they will have no clothes, “uncircumcised” means that they will not have been circumcised, and “possessing nothing” means that they will have no wealth with them. Thus will they be gathered. When the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said that they would be naked, Aisha asked, “O Messenger of Allah, will the men and women be looking at one another?” He replied:
