self-admiration, and he fears being abased.

“And We raised high your renown.” No one doubts that the Messenger’s renown was raised—peace and blessings be upon him.

First, his name is proclaimed at every prayer time from the highest place, in the call to prayer: “I testify that none is worthy of worship but Allah; I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

Second, his name is raised in every prayer as an obligation, during the tashahhud, for the tashahhud is obligatory. It includes: “I testify that none is worthy of worship but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”

Third, his name is raised in connection with every act of worship. The Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—is remembered in every act of worship because every act of worship must fulfill two essential conditions: sincerity to Allah Most High and adherence to the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him. It is well known that anyone who follows the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him and his family—will bear in mind while worshipping that he is following Allah’s Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him and his family—in that act. This is one way in which his renown is raised.

His words, “For indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease,” are glad tidings from Allah—Mighty and Majestic—to the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him and his family—and to the rest of the nation. The Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—experienced hardship when he was in Mecca and was being hard-pressed, as well as in Tā’if, and likewise in Medina at the hands of the hypocrites. Allah therefore says, “For indeed, with hardship comes ease.” That is: just as We opened your heart for you, relieved you of your burden, and raised high your renown—and these are tremendous blessings—so too, the hardship that befalls you must be accompanied by ease. “For indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.” Regarding this verse, Ibn Abbas said, “One hardship will never overcome two eases” (1),
