knew nothing; rather, he was among the unlettered: ﴿He is the One who raised among the unlettered a Messenger from among themselves﴾ [al-Jumuʿah: 2]. He could neither read nor write, yet he attained this lofty station through the revelation Allah sent down to him. He thus learned and taught. Here, Allah said, ﴿then guided﴾ rather than, “then guided you”—and Allah knows best—so that the meaning would be broader and more comprehensive. He himself was guided—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and Allah guided others through him. He was therefore both a guide and rightly guided—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Thus, ﴿then guided﴾ means that He guided you and guided others through you.
﴿And He found you poor, then enriched.﴾ That is, He found you poor, possessing nothing. ﴿Then enriched﴾ means that He enriched you and enriched others through you. Allah Most High said: ﴿Allah has promised you abundant spoils that you will take﴾ [al-Fath: 20]. How many immense and abundant spoils the Muslims took from the unbelievers beneath the shadow of swords! All of this came through this noble Messenger, when they followed his guidance and adhered to his sunnah. Through him, Allah Most High granted them victory, and they took spoils from the eastern and western reaches of the earth.
If the Muslim nation were to return to the path of the righteous predecessors, victory, prosperity, honor, and strength would return to it. Regrettably, however, the Muslim nation today consists of people who each look only to their own interests, regardless of whether that will support Islam or leave it forsaken.
Anyone who reflects on the events that have occurred recently can plainly see that they have, in reality, brought humiliation upon the Muslims and are likely to result in tremendous evil, particularly from the Jews and Christians, who are allies of one another. Allah Most High said: ﴿O you who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as allies; they are allies of one another﴾ [al-Mā’idah: 51]. They—that is, the Jews and Christians—are united in their hostility toward the Muslims. Neither wants Islam, its adherents, or its ascendancy. Yet Allah Most High will grant victory to His religion, whatever the circumstances. Allah Most High will surely give victory to His religion and His Book, even if the Muslims suffer
